Institutional Research

Me and my media partner have decided to research into different types of institutions and the logo's for them. This is so that we can get some ideas and inspiration for when it comes creating our own institution and logo. I have researched into many different institutions so that I can get a good idea of what target audience they aim for and how they brand their artists.

Institutions

Warner Brother's Records are on of the largest institutions in the industry. They have signed people such as Lily Allen, Jason Derulo and Michael Buble. Warner have also signed rock bands such as My Chemical Romance and Metalica however, these groups do not fit our genre of music, therefore Warner Brothers may not be the best institution to find inspiration from.

Sony Records targets a similar target audience to mine and Lizzie's audience. For example they have signed artists such as Britney Spears, Calvin Harris and Kelly Clarkson. I like the logo and the name to Sony Music, I feel like their institution is professional and by researching into this record label/ institution it has given me ideas for my own institution.

Syco Entertainment is owned by Simon Cowell, Syco conglomerate with Sony Music and have signed artists such as Olly Murs and One Direction. They have also signed artists with a similar target audience to mine and Lizzie's e.g. Little Mix and Five. In addition Syco have also signed Fifth Harmony who are the artists of our chosen song and our main inspiration. I think that they mainly target audiences between 13- 21 the same as our target audience and therefore an institution similar to the Syco Entertainment label is a good place to find inspiration from.

Universal are one of the biggest institutions in the industry (they are part of The big 3). They have signed some of the biggest artists such as Taylor Swift (who we looked at for inspiration), Kanye West and Lady Gaga. This is a good institution to find inspiration from because they have signed similar artists/ have a similar branding and target audience to what we are looking for.

Island have signed some big artists in the industry such as Katy Perry, Jessie J, Florence and the Machine, Mcbusted and Fall out Boy. I like the name and the logo that represents Island and feel like many strong female artists are signed to this label, similar to Fifth Harmony e.g. Katy Perry and Jessie J.

XL Recordings are a small/ independent record label/ institution and have signed artists such as Adele, Dizzie Rascal and Radiohead. However this is not really the genre me and Lizzie are aiming for and therefore we may have different ideas for our institution. On the other hand I really like the simple but bold effect of XL Recordings logo and may be something we consider for our institution.

Distribution institutions

MTV are a company that develop a TV Channel, music channels and award ceremony's, they were created in 1981 and are mostly known for their music channels and video distribution. They were the first channel to do this and now that they are more popular they distribute their brand through technology/ convergence such as the iPhone. However this is what makes YouTube and Vevo more successful, due to the convergence of technologies people can now access music globally and were ever they are for example on YouTube and Vevo.

YouTube was created in 2005 by 3 former Paypal employees. The overall goal that the creators of YouTube were aiming for was to create and publish good quality music and videos to everybody all over the world (globally). They have definitely achieved this goal and are now one of the most popular music sites world wide. YouTube is a good site to publish and distribute music because artists and their fans are able to have good communication, also an artist is more likely to have an increased level of fans and support if they are on YouTube due to the site being used globally by thousands of users.

Tidal is a streaming service that has over 25 million users and 75000+ videos. The site was launched in 2014. They also have rights to the big 3 and lots of other smaller/ independent labels. Tidal is owned by the popular artist/ singer Jay Z, making it even more popular due to the creator. Tidal can be downloaded to any computer, tablet or phone, this is good because it means that the site is portable and easily accessible by its users. However, on the other hand Tidal is not free like YouTube or Vevo and a monthly payment is expected, this can turn people away from the site if they are unable to afford their music, therefore when it comes to creating my own institution and distributions I will think about including a free streaming/ music sharing service to ensure that everybody can access our artists music.

Spotify is also a well known music sharing and distribution site. Spotify was founded in 2006. Spotify is free to stream music, however you can also pay too purchase music and listen offline. This is a good way to get people to listen to music and if they especially like it then they are able to pay for it if they want. Record labels such as BBC, Warner and Universal all distribute their music on Spotify, this has lead to 75 million active users of which 20 million use the payment method. You are also able to save music, make your own playlists accounts and radio's which is a partly the reason of its popularity.

iTunes is one of the most popular music download site. iTunes was created in 1998 by Apple and is still one of the primary institutions where consumers can by music. It is accessible on iPhones, Apple macs and all other apple products. Therefore it is a good site to use and find ideas from, not just due to the popularity of the site but due to the ways in which they conglomerate their music and artists.
