Prop Research

Me and Lizzie have been researching into props for quite a while now, this is because they are going to be a big part of our video and we want it too look as effective as possible. After researching into a mixture of music videos (student and real), we have found lots of video conventions for prop ideas.

Glitter/ Confetti
When researching into Marina and The Diamonds music videos, I found that she used a lot of prop shots for example blowing confetti out of her hands. This is very effective and looks even better in slow motion, therefore me and Lizzie would really like to use this idea in our video however with glitter instead, this is because it will suit the theme and genre of our music video better and go with other shots we are thinking of using, in addition Fifth Harmony have used glitter in photoshoots/ videos before as shown in the image to the right (Camila from Fifth Harmony).

Sparklers and Signs
We came up with the idea to use sparklers after looking at student videos (Demi Lovato- Firestarter A- level work and Hurtwood House Let Me Think About It A-level piece). I really like the effect of sparklers and think it would be a good idea to spell words out with them such as 'BOSS' the name of our chosen song. Me and Lizzie also like the effect of the 'confident' sign in the Boss video by Fifth Harmony and are thinking of using this idea. Fifth Harmony tend to use alot of font/ words in their music videos to make the important words and message stand out to the audience, this is something that we may also try to do.
Neon Props I have found that neon objects and paint appear a lot in many popular music videos in the dance/ pop genre of music. I really like the effect of neon against dark backgrounds because it makes it stand out and look eye catching. I think me and Lizzie are aiming to buy some neon props for our video, I think it will really make our video stand out and look more effective if these types of props are used.

Dollar signs/ notes
I started to research into how the narrative of money is used in music videos. The narrative of our song 'BO$$' is related to women earning their own money and being independent therefore to add to the narrative of the video I would really like to use dollar notes and signs throughout the video to make it clear for the audience what the song and video is about. For example our music group could throw the dollar notes up in the air for a shot, this could then be repeated throughout the video when money is discussed, and by using editing techniques we could put this in slow motion.

In addition, Marina and The Diamonds has also used money/ dollars in her video for Oh No, this song has a similar meaning/ narrative to BO$$ by Fifth Harmony for example, Marina sings about being a successful and independent women similar to the narrative of BOSS.
