Costume Research

To begin with me and my media partner looked at what artists wear in the pop/dance genre of music in different videos and photo shots and went on to create some mood boards.

We found that in many pop and dance videos during a dance routine or group shot most of the artists wear the same or similar items/ colour of clothing, this is too represent them as a whole e.g. Fifth Harmony and The Saturdays. Therefore when it comes to deciding on the costume for our video we should use this typical convention. It was also clear that a lot of artists from this genre wear bright/ bold items of clothing for example Beyoncé, Katy Perry and Marina. I really like the contrast of the different colours, and if me and Lizzie are thinking of having different coloured backgrounds and lighting then the costumes similar to my mood board would work really well. 

The second mood board is related to denim, checkered prints and casual clothing, this convention is also found a lot in our chosen genre and I really like these types of clothing from different celebrity outfits for example Pixie Lott, Cheryl Cole, Rita Ora, Beyoncé and Lana Del Rey. I also feel like the blue and red colours are effective and would stand out really well on camera. 

 

After lots of research into different music videos in this genre and costume it was clear that an American/ USA theme in music videos and outfits are really popular (mostly used in American artists such as Katy Perry, Ke$ha, Lana Del Rey, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga and Marina and The Diamonds). I really the American themed clothing and think its really clever to use for different narratives e.g. in Fifth Harmony's BO$$ the lyrics discuss Dollars and Michelle Obama therefore I think including some American clothing would work well with the narrative of our song.

Also many of the clothing and costume pieces I have looked at would look really good all together in a music video. Due to our chosen song 'BO$$' being created by an American music group and even using dollar signs in the name of the song it would be really clever to use a theme of red, white and blue for example red shirts and denim for some scenes, totally white outfits for group scenes, and bright bold colours for individual shots. 

I also drew some examples of outfits that would suit and look good together in a group for our music video. This image is of five dress ideas, me and Lizzie were thinking of having some all in white costume shots to represent them as a group.

We would also like a shot of every group member wearing an item of denim, not necessarily the same items e.g. a denim jacket, skirt, shorts. This is to show them as individuals but also as a group at the same time.
