CD Front Cover Research

Beyonce's album 4 cover uses lots of neutral colours/ themes. This album cover is eye catching and interesting due to Beyonce's costume and the layout of the CD.  The black/ feathered outfit in the photo is contrasted against the neutral background, this makes the artist (Beyonce) stand out. Beyonce's target audience is very diverse and therefore her album layout is appropriate for a wide target audience. The font and size of the writing stands out and looks professional, however Beyonce's album name '4' is quite small, I would personally make this bigger and stand out more.

Fifth Harmony are our main inspiration for our video and our album/ digi pack. This album represents the group as very sophisticated but also like a pop/ girl group. The main theme to the cover is dark/ black and gold colours. This is a really good theme and represents the genre of music e.g. pop and dance. It shows that they can be elegant and professional but also fun and different to lots of other artists. The font used stands out and looks professional, the album name and artists are in the same text/ font, not a lot of artists do this, however it makes the layout and the album look really good.
This album cover also represents some conventions noted by Andrew Goodwin, for example their look/ clothing. Fifth Harmony are female based and therefore their clothing is revealing which is a common clothing choice for female artists.

Ariana's album cover has a good professional theme, the actual photo of Ariana has been photoshopped to black and white, this is something me and Lizzie could try when we do our cover. The font is very small however and in some areas hard to read. But the font still stands out and suits the genre of her music.

Marina And The Diamonds album cover for 'Froot' is very eye-catching. This is due to the colours and the theme that is presented. The font used for her album name is very bold and stands out due to the multi colour effect that is used. In addition the name of the artist is bold and stands out. The lighting used in the photo shows different colours, along with her makeup and jewellery. This theme suits the genre of Marina's music e.g. dance/ retro. This is something me and Lizzie are going to aim for in our album cover. Andew Goodwins theory stated that close up shots are commonly used in the music industry/ music videos, marina has used a close up shot to present her album cover and show what type of artist she is.

Charli XCX's genre of music is pop/ dance similar to our chosen genre. Her album cover is very bright, I really like the plain background that is used, this is because it makes the artist stand out. Similar to Marina's cover Charli has used different lighting effects on her hair/ the photo that has been used.

In addition the font is very basic, however I think this looks good and makes the artist seem important.

Ella Eyre's album cover represents a very vintage feel. You can tell by looking at the cover that her the genre of music is going to be a slow/ indie style of music. I really like the different colours and patterns used in the cover. The font type looks very elegant and sophisticated, this then represents the artist in the same way.

Halsey is a very small/ new artist to the music industry, her genre of music is very indie/ retro similar to Marina And The Diamonds. Halsey has represented a relationship between visuals and lyrics/ her album e.g. the name of the album is 'Badlands' and the image presented is of a mountain e.g. land. In Andrew Goodwin's theory he states this is a very common convention in the industry. The colour of her hair and the theme are matched which looks really different and unusual (making it stand out more). The font is also small and basic however the busy background image is also eye-catching.

Little Mix are very similar to the way we want to portray our music group this is due to the genre of music they present e.g. pop/dance. The plain/ brick wall background makes the artists stand out. In addition their costume/ clothing is the most distracting area. This is something me and Lizzie are going to think about in detail for our music album layout. The name of the group is presented in a big/ writing effect font, this looks really different and unique which is something I am trying to aim for, for the artists we are aiming to create.

Demi's album cover is not something that I would personally aim for, this is because I think it looks plain and doesn't stand out much. I think this is due to the basic font that is used. The image is also very faded. It doesn't really represent the artists genre e.g. fun/ pop. However the fact that her name Demi is in bold is a common convention of album covers e.g. it makes the artist name stand out/ is the most important aspect, also in Andrew Goodwin's theory he states that close up shots are commonly used e.g. Demi Lovato's image is a close up shot.

Iggy's album is very bold due to the colour, costume and font presented. Me and Lizzie want to represent our artists in a similar way, this is so that it suits the genre for example Iggy's songs are very pop/ dance. Her album name Bounce is presented with very different/ unique font. In addition her costume is very bold due to the colour and patterns used, they contrast against the background colour, which makes the cover look really effective and original.

Ellie Gouldings album cover represents a very colourful theme. The multi colours look really effective, the pink background also matches the font. The image of Ellie is very dark/ in black and white (similar to Ariana's album), I really like this effect and think it makes the artist stand out.

Lana Del Rey's older album (Born To Die) is in the indie/ slow genre of music. This album cover is for her paradise edition of Born To Die e.g. an extended version. The theme to the album is golds, blues, greens (very tropical/ bold colours). Lana's name is in bold at the top of the page similar to Marina And The Diamonds and Beyonce. Similar font has been used for the name and title of the song which looks really effective. The main image is Lana in a very tropical/ bright location. The location of an image on an album cover is very important therefore when I come to creating my album cover me and my media partner will have to think carefully about where we shot our photos.

Recently Lana has also released a single for her upcoming album Honeymoon called 'Music to watch boys to'. However unlike many artists Lana has not presented an image of herself but of a location. The font for her name is also smaller than the title of the song. I really like the effect of the neon lighting that has been used, it makes it look bold and eye catching and is something that me and Lizzie may think of using.

In addition Lana also uses the same font for her name and sometimes even the album name for all of her albums and singles.

Katy Perry's album 'Prism' has a very slow feel, this is represented through the album cover e.g. due to the floral background and the very light/ natural image that is presented of Katy. However this is not something me and Lizzie want to portray our artists as on our album cover.

Taylor's recent album cover for 1989 is presented on a Polaroid, this is a very original idea and represents the genre of her music e.g. vintage and upbeat. Her font is hand written as if she has signed it for her fans/ listeners. This is a really good idea and something that we could consider for our album cover.

Kesha's album represent her as an artist but also the album itself. Kesha is a very fun/ bold, pop artist and therefore her album covers are full of colour and bold/ glittery text. The image used has been edited to look as if its been torn in half, this looks very effective and represents a narrative for the songs in the album. Kesha's name is in glittery, bold font which shows that she is fun and her music in the pop/ dance genre. The colour theme i.e blue and gold work really well together and is also matched/linked with her clothing and accessories e.g. her blue lipstick and t-shirt.

Rita Ora's album represents a red and black theme, her font is bold and eye catching. Rita's album name is actually called 'ORA' which is her last name, this is similar to other artists such as Demi (who named her album Demi) and Beyonce who named her album Beyonce. However I feel like this convention has been over used and is not something that I would use. The close up shot of Rita shows her expression and her main look/ style.

The Saturdays have many different bright/ colourful album covers. When researching into their albums I found that they used this image to advertise their album (headlines). Me and Lizzie are planning to use signs similar to this in our music video and is something that we could use for our album cover. The Saturdays represent a very bold and colourful look on their album covers this also represents their genre of music e.g. pop/ dance similar to our genre.
