Editing Process

We have edited our music video on the iMovie (on the apple macs). We thought it would be the best place to edit our video due to the wide range of editing tools, transitions, fonts etc that you are able to use.

To start of with, me and Lizzie imputed all of our shots, videos and photos into iMovie. At first we thought it was a good idea to put all of our shots in order onto iMovie, however we soon realised that we were unable to do it this way, this is due to the timing and syncing of the miming always changing during the editing procedure. In addition we filmed our video over various dates and therefore used fillers in the areas we didn't have shots for, however now we have all of our shots in the correct places and things like fillers became very helpful in this process.

In this image, it shows our shots in order at the bottom of the screen, iMovie has many different ways and tools to edit that me and Lizzie learnt about and was able to use. When filming our video, we mostly followed the storyboard and lyric annotations, these forms of research and planning where very useful, not just for filming but also editing.
However we did not follow these plans entirely e.g. we used and extra variety of shots and different effects.

Firstly, in every shot we added to the video we had to turn of the audio/ sound so that it did not go over the song. This also helped us sync the miming with the song.

Me and Lizzie wanted to change some of the lighting on our shots, we were able to do this as shown in the image above, we could change the colours, layers etc on every shot, we tended not to always use the same effects on every shots so that they looked different and more fun/ bold which is something that suits our target audience.

The option to change the video effect was also available, we tended to use glow, day into night and hard light the most, this was because it made our shots bolder and brighter, which is how we wanted our video to look.

In addition we used the Flipped effect on some shots for example on this image, we placed the same clip over each other and used the side by side effect but also flipped the images inwards.

During the beginning of our video, when you hear clicking sounds and the first beat of the song, we used a quick/ fast cut pace to sync with the sounds of the song. During our fast cuts, we changed the speed of certain shots for example this image of the group facing with their backs to the camera, we made this 20x the speed of the original clip, this gives an almost shakey effect to the shot which looks effective and matches with the upbeat sounds in the song.
I really like the beginning of our music video, many of the fast cuts and shots are group images, we edited it so that all of the first shots were group shots to introduce our artists as a group, in addition many of the shots are them facing the other direction, this gives the feeling of anticipation within our audience to discover more about the group and who they are/ their individuality in one and two person shots that we have also used.

Towards the end of the song BO$$, there is an area where the pace of the music slows down, for this we used a shot of Phoebe blowing glitter in the cameras direction, we changed the video effect to Day into Night and also used a slow motion effect, I really like this shot because the quality and lighting is really good and interesting for our audience. Phoebe's makeup also stands out (neon paint).

In our storyboard and before we began to edit our video, me and Lizzie did not intend on over-lapping images this was because we were unaware that we could use this effect. Once we put all our video in order, we started to overlap different clips, we did this too make them stand out more. We changed the opacity and fade effects on different clips and went onto using the effect throughout the video. I really like how the images look together this is because we have used a variety of different lighting in all of our shots, some are very dark and some are very bright, therefore when we blend the two together the quality of the images look better and even more bold and fun. We over lapped images such as dance routines and one person shots and also one person shots/ dance routines with sparkler scenes that we filmed later on in our editing process.

Here are some examples:

In this particular shot, me and Lizzie added a shot of Raya in her audition, at first this was just to see how it looks and it actually turned out extremely well. During the scene where we use this clips we have layered over many different images at different times to sync with the beat of the music. Also it shows the audience an extra location adding to the overall effect of the music video.

I also really like the individual/ one person shot clips with a layer of sparklers over the top, this gives a very bold and unique effect that challenges conventions of other pop/ dance videos. In some clips where we use this the sparklers spell out the letters BOSS which is the name of our song.

When I researched into various pop and dance music videos with a similar target audience to us, not many of the videos included transitions e.g. wipes except for Fifth Harmony's video to Boss. We didn't use many effects like this, however in some areas of the song it matches the beat of the music, we used the wipe transition, however it does not totally wipe across the full length of the screen, it comes out a little and then goes back, I think this shot is especially unique and interesting.

Finally, to finish the video I added fast paced cuts of the same clip however from a high and low angle, this shot was filmed on two cameras and shows the girls throwing dollars up in the air, I really like this shot because the use of money as a prop looks very effective, it shows shadows, lighting and also all of the girls in the group.

I really like the continuity of these shots together, it also makes it more interesting with two different angles.

We edited the final shot to be of the entire group walking away to resemble a sassy/ 'boss' attitude to link with the narrative of the song, the clip shows all of the girls turning around to face the camera which then fades to black and the song finishes.

Our video so far

At the moment, me and Lizzie have completed our video up to our standards/ how we like it, however we are going to ask for audience feedback/ research to see if there is anything people would change/ pick up on that they don't like that we would be able to change and improve on.
